Casket Flag Guide: Size, Draping, Folding and Display

The American flag draped over a casket is one of the most meaningful ways the nation honors those who served. Whether you're a family member planning a service, a funeral director or part of an honor guard, here's what to know about casket flags.

What size is a casket flag?

The standard casket flag, also called a burial flag, measures 5' x 9-1/2'. That's large enough to drape a standard casket, and when it's folded into the traditional triangle it fits a standard memorial flag display case.

How the flag is draped

According to the U.S. Flag Code, when the flag covers a casket it is placed so the union (the blue field of stars) is at the head and over the left shoulder of the deceased. The flag is not lowered into the grave and should not touch the ground.

Folding the flag

At the end of the service, the flag is traditionally folded thirteen times into a tight triangle with only the blue field and stars showing, then presented to the next of kin. Honor guards practice this fold carefully, and it's a moving part of the ceremony.

Displaying the flag afterward

Many families keep the folded flag in a memorial display case, often with a photo, medals or a plaque. A 5' x 9-1/2' flag folded into a triangle fits a standard burial flag case.

Requesting a VA burial flag

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs provides a burial flag for eligible veterans. Families usually request it through the funeral director, or by filing VA Form 27-2008 at a VA regional office or most U.S. post offices. Check with the VA or your funeral director for current eligibility rules.

Why families and funeral homes buy casket flags

  • A replacement when the original flag is lost, damaged or faded over the years
  • Additional flags so more than one family member can receive one
  • Flags for memorial services held without a VA flag
  • Stock for funeral homes, cemeteries and honor guards

Choosing a material

Our 5' x 9-1/2' casket flag is made in the USA by Eder Flag in three materials. Nylon is lightweight and bright. Cotton has the traditional look and feel. 2-ply polyester is the most durable choice if the flag will later be flown outdoors.
