Wall Mount American Flags: Choosing a Size and Mounting Style

A giant American flag on a wall makes a lasting impression in a school gym, arena, warehouse, car dealership, fire station or on the side of a building. Wall flags are made to order with a mounting header designed for hanging flat, rather than the sleeve or grommets used on a flagpole.

Choosing a size

Measure the wall space you want to fill, then leave some room around the flag so it doesn't look crowded. As a rough guide:

• 8' x 12' to 12' x 18': lobbies, gyms, showrooms, fire station bays and the end walls of smaller buildings
• 15' x 25' to 20' x 38': arenas, large gyms, warehouses and building exteriors
• 25' x 40' to 30' x 60': stadiums, large warehouse walls, dealerships and landmark buildings

Mounting styles

• Top Header: a heavy duck cloth header across the top with grommets. The simplest option for hanging from hooks or a bar.
• Fully Framed Header: header material on all four sides with grommets all the way around, so the flag can be secured on every edge. A good choice outdoors or anywhere air moves.
• Double Rope: the standard header plus a header on the fly end, finished with rope thimbles and a grommet on each side.
• Invisible Header: a concealed header for a clean, finished look on the wall.

Nylon or polyester?

Nylon is lighter, brighter and lower in cost, and is a great fit indoors. Heavy-duty polyester is the more durable choice for building exteriors and outdoor walls exposed to wind and weather.

Displaying the flag correctly

The U.S. Flag Code says that when the flag is displayed flat against a wall, either horizontally or vertically, the union (blue field) should be uppermost and to the flag's own right, which is the observer's left. Keep the flag clear of heaters, lights and anything that could damage it.
